The Lower Primary Division at The Home School marks the child’s transition from Montessori exploration to more structured learning, while still preserving the joy, curiosity, and independence of early years. It consists of Grade 1 and Grade 2, following the Cambridge Primary curriculum at Checkpoint Stages 1 and 2, respectively. This stage lays the foundation in core areas such as English, Mathematics, Science, Tamil, Hindi, and Wellbeing, while gently introducing children to academic routines that nurture both discipline and creativity.
A central focus in the Lower Primary is Phonics, which continues from the Montessori Division and equips children with the ability to decode, read fluently, and develop a lifelong love for language. Alongside phonics, foundation grammar is introduced to strengthen communication skills, vocabulary, and comprehension. Learning is inquiry-based, allowing children to make natural connections between sounds, words, and meanings, while also encouraging them to express their ideas with confidence.
The curriculum goes beyond textbooks, integrating sensory-rich and experiential activities that tap into the child’s natural growth. Children are encouraged to ask questions, solve problems, and collaborate with peers, helping them become independent thinkers. Classrooms remain small and interactive, ensuring that every child receives individual attention and guidance from facilitators who act as mentors and nurturers.
To balance academics, children actively participate in a diverse range of extracurricular activities including Bharatham, Kalari, Karate, Chess, Yoga, Art, Silambam, Gardening, Music (Veena, Vocal, Mridangam), Theatre, Photography, STEM Club, and Eco Club. These opportunities foster creativity, discipline, physical fitness, and social responsibility.
At this stage, evaluation is continuous and descriptive, focusing on progress, effort, and growth rather than rote performance. By the end of Grade 2, children develop strong literacy and numeracy foundations, healthy social relationships, and a sense of curiosity about the world — preparing them to embrace the next phase of their learning journey with confidence and joy.
